Wintery Picture Books for Preschoolers

For those of you with mountains of snow as well as those who lack in any of the white winterland, here is a list of some of the wintery books we've been enjoying this season. These are perfect for cuddling up under a thick blanket and enjoying with your little ones, either for listening to or for early readers. I hope you enjoy them as much as we have.

The Mitten by Jan Brett
A newly added favorite to our shelves, this book, by one of our most loved authors/artists, Jan Brett, tells of a boy wishing for a pair of white mittens. He loses one, and a group of animals decide to make it their home.

Learning to Ski with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen
A fun rhyme tells of the adventures of Mr. Magee and his dog as they attempt to learn the art of skiing only to realize how much they *don't* know. Fun art and words bring you right through this comical tale.

The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett
This book, also by Ms. Brett (told you she was one of our favorites!), is a retelling of the classic story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This time though, it takes place starring an Inuit girl and Arctic fun all around.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
A sweet classic of a boy enthralled with the snow and the activities to be found in a winter's day. The art in this one always makes me smile, and honestly, I wish my little ones had little red snowsuits to wear out in our winter wonderland.

Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton
Anyone that has read and enjoyed Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel will love this one by the same author. Katy, a red tractor, waits and waits to be of use. Finally. a giant snowstorm calls her to aid the townspeople, freeing them one by one.

Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson + illustrated by Jane Chapman
Also a favorite author of ours, this story of Bear is mostly about him sleeping. But while he sleeps, into his cave come a variety of friends and he awakens to a party happening right in his den.

Sergio Makes a Splash by Edel Rodriguez
This story is not necessarily a "winter" tale, but I think of winter when I think of penguins, so I went ahead and included it in our list. Sergio is a penguin who loves water, but hates (or at least thinks he does) swimming. A sweet story of overcoming fears.

Utterly Otterly Night by Mary Casanova + illustrated by Ard Hoyt
Otter is growing up and gaining new responsibilities. While out with his family playing in the snow one night, he senses danger, and puts his abilities to good use in looking out for others.
